Basic Role Playing rules and tips

Before I start typing what I want, I need to say why I made this thread. Well this forum, Genjutsu illusions, is for Role Playing. If you ever visited any other Role playing site you could have noticed there is a "ROLE PLAY RULES" section or something. On here we just have..."Role Play Thread Rules", where it tells you what to do when you make an RP. Than we have "Role Play spamming" where it tells you the limit for Role play threads. But no where in there do we have Role Play guides.

Several members have made things like this on their blogs or on some random thread when a new person pops out and says "Hey can someone tell me how to RP"? But it would be smart to make one thread where you have everything. I mean really...how many of you were like "Ugh, wtf do I do?" When you first saw RPing, but you thought it was interesting. Than you had to ask people for tips and stuff. It would be a lot more easier if we had one thread where you had everything explained, right? And I mean...a new Role Player appears, others are like "ugh -.-" and we explain the same stuff over and over again....Or no one explains, and the poor person, posts somewhere, and than the others yell at him or something...Like that one guy posted "What is the point of this?" On NARUTO REAL NINJA. I understand that is really annoying to see on your Rp, I would probably get annoyed as well if someone posted that on any of my RPs, but still...he isn't the one to blame.

So, now I am going to write what I wanted, and I hope new members aren't lazy enough to read this....

When you see RP, that means Role Playing I am sure most people know that....Role Playing is an online forum game, where you get to act as another character, and make your own stories with other RPers.

The MOST BASIC thing you need to know is:

    ""-For talking.

    Italics-For thinking.

You always talk in third person.

You use () for talk that isn't related to the RP

You should NEVER use chatspeak (u, ur, y?, r and so on) (Well you can use it in '()' Like (I gtg) or (Brb!))

Bad example of RPing: *Rai wakes up* "Yawn" *She stands up and goes downstairs to eat breakfast* "Mom, what r we havin for breakfast?"

Good example of RPing: Rai slowly opened her eyes as the sun set up, following with a short yawn. She stood up and went downstairs, with out changing her clothes, she was just really hungry. She stopped walking next to her mother who was frying something at the stove. Rai stood on her tip toes, trying to see what was she preparing "Mom, what are we having for breakfast?" She asked curiously (>.> It doesn't have to be that detailed...But adjectives are your friends, remember that! xD)

    Next thing.

Godmodding- This happens a lot. Its a bad habbit of always wanting to win in combat. It happens sometimes, because people are just like that, and don't like loosing in anything, not just RPs. But still that isn't a good enough excuse. Sometimes you can win, but sometimes you should loose as well! If both of the people that are fighting want to win, than just make it a draw

    • RP making and leadership: Well if you are new to RPing, you shouldn't make an RP right away, first join some RPs, RP for a while and than make one. When you want to make an RP you need to have:
A good idea, that you later shape into a plot

    A plot

A character sheet~you put here what you want other people to write about their characters, most basic is; Name, Age, Personality, Background and Looks. You can add a bunch of things next to that, depends on an RP...

    Chapters~If you really want this...

When you're the leader, you shoulod try to be nice to the people that join, but still correct the things they do wrong. You also need to take care of the Role Play Thread Rules So your thread doesn't get locked. You can always kick out someone out of your RP as well.

Here are a few examples of GOOD Rps:

    Xipho Chronicles

    The Trinity

    Power between Light and Dark

    Nothings in Imaru

    Azio, curse or blessing

    • Character personalities-Well, here is a thing, not many people do actually...you should create different characters for different RPs. Don't make the same personality for the same character all the time. It gets kind of boring...so try to make characters different, like one is Fun and hyper, and for another RP your character is tough, mean and a bully, than for another he or she is a geek or nerd always picked on by the others, get it? ^^
    • Grammar: This isn't the most important thing. It doesn't have to do much with RPing skills, and you can't really judge an RPer by his or her grammar........but when you see someone with really poor grammar, it doesn't give you a good impresion of him. You just need to try to have the best grammar you can, so the others don't need to decode your post! xD
There it is. Some of the basic things you need to know before you start RPing.

It would be nice if Tiger made this a sticky thread or something. I didn't want to make this just for now, I think it should stay here for every new RPer that enters Hokagesroom!

Re: Basic Role Playing rules and tips

Making a Roleplay is like making a story people. So I am here to list the DO's and DON'TS of Roleplaying(This is the lazy version)

    DON'TS first:
~NEVERuse an '*' to symbolize an action. NEVER! You look like an idiot andyou should be punished. (Quoted from a friend actually)
~NEVER use chat speak. EVER! Nothing along the lines of, "LOL, BRB,*U, R" They ALSO make you look like an idiot and you should be hunted down and slaughtered.
~ONE-LINERS,try NOT to use them. Using only dialogue is boring, do try to usedetail. Even if it is a few sentences, it makes you seen smarter, evenif you aren't. Why do you think I look so smart?

    DO'S
~ALWAYS use proper grammar, I.E. Punctuation, SPELLING (hint hint to ALL, including myself) Commas, Apostrophe's etc.
~DETAIL, the thing that makes or breaks a story
~IMAGINATION! Yes, actually it seems as if we lack this.
~A PLOT, self explanatory! If you have no clue what a plot is go look it up.

I could list many more! But I don't want to make you anymore annoyed than you are now.

ALSO when making up aroleplay! try to make it something that EVERYONE can relate to, or thevast majority. Make up your*OWN idea. It's cooler that way, and thenyou get a variety of roleplays. Being different is good, and it makesthings last longer. Some things don't have a plot. When you give it a plot, it's a lot better! (Yes a lot is 2 word)

Good day or night, however you want to put it.

When I was typingthis I was in NO way trying to attack people I am just merely statingthe things that should NOT be done when roleplaying because it doesannoy people and I am saving those people from looking like morons whenthey roleplay somewhere else. But if they continue doing this, I will make fun of all of those who do this.

But, this is my better guide for roleplaying and such.

    WARNING, THIS MY BE OFFENSIVE.

Roleplayingis like creating a story with a group of people. You control one personand interact with other people's characters. So you can't controlanyone else's character. Don't even think about it. If you don't wantpeople messing with your character, then don't mess with theirs. It'scalled respect and it goes both ways. No godmoding (which is whatthat's called for idiots). While we're into terms, let me tell you someother terms you don't want to be called. One is Mary/Gary Sue. I'venever liked the name, but I don't like the person who does it very mucheither. A Mary/Gary Sue is perfect and everything in the world isperfect for them too. If you're life is perfect you have issues, butthat doesn't mean you should bestow the issues on your character.Moving on...

Roleplaying is a form of writing. That means write you idiots! If you aren't using proper grammar, spelling, capitalization, andpunctuation, then you should stop roleplaying right now and go toGoogle. Search 'grammar' and read at least five of those results.Writing is an art and if you dare to use an asterisk (for idiots that'swhat this: * is) to mean an action, you are a two year old scribblingon walls. If you're having trouble with spelling, download MozillaFirefox or the Google toolbar for Internet Explorer. It's automaticspell checking, people! As for capitalization, you should know therules for it. Follow it! You're not on a freaking cell phone! Save itfor texting (and don't even try to tell me use text speak in roleplayor I may have to find a cruel and unusual punishment for you). Andpunctuation? Again, go search it on Google. If you're not using periodscorrectly, read about fifty of the results. Everyone else should readat least five.

Next is length! Yes, it's quality over quantity, but there actually needs to be a some quantity or else you losequality. But for those of you who have issues already, we're about tohave even more. How exciting! A literate roleplayer can produce twoparagraphs with ten sentences each in them without batting an eye. I'vewritten seven fifteen sentence paragraphs before for an intro. I surehope you aren't calling yourself literate if you can't write two tensentence paragraphs. But you're worse than a newbie if you can'tproduce at least five sentences for a post. I personally would try forten though. You can do this by talking about stuff no one would careabout ever. Description always earns you points in quality and it's agood way to practice everything from the last paragraph. Plus, you canthen work on switching up your sentences. If I wrote every sentence inthis like "Roleplaying is creating a story. You write the story. Youinteract with other characters. You shouldn't godmode." then you wouldbe bored with me by now. Well, you probably already are, but still. That's part of the art of writing. By changing your sentence structure, you're actually make a picture.

And speaking of pictures, theart of writing is supposed to tell you something. All story's have atype of plot. In roleplays it's usually very little due tointeractions, but you need to do something other than have a randombunch of people meet in a desert. Why the heck are they there? What arethey going to do to get out of the desert? How are they going to do it?Tell a story that makes people ask questions that will actually beanswered. Use your imagination, but make sure it sticks with thesetting. If you're in a realistic roleplay of teens in high school, they are not all of a sudden going to be attacked by a dragon unlessthat in the plot. Be sensible. Imagination and plot makes your pictureworthy of being called 'art'.

Another word about telling someoneyou'll be right back or whatever. If you are not talking in characteruse the abbreviation OOC: for out of character so that people know yourcharacters not going to be right back. Then use BIC: to symbol you'reback in character (I wonder where I got BIC: from.). It's not that hardto add three little letters and colon to organize things; you shouldn'tfind it that hard. Or use double Paren.

If you need to look atgood examples of roleplaying, simply search for roleplaying forums onforum sites such as proboards or invisionfree or through Google. Ifyour post doesn't look like you're telling a story, you're not doing itright. I suggest you read books to really give you ideas of how toproperly roleplay and involve plot. Once you do this, you will knowwhat successful roleplaying really is.

SO, don't come cryingto a mod that you think I am hard on you. I am going easy on you. I canget many roleplaying guides from other people. But the other ones arescarier... Trust me

    KatLove you all!
Well, not really, some of you I find quite stupid.

Oh, so you've acctually made alot of "How to" Threads then O__O??

  9. #9
um, yea Kat I know you made one, but it was on your blog. Now there is really no need to post TWO RP guides. And a lot of people made their guides, but they were on blogs or old threads thats why I made this one. It would be rather stupid if everyone posted their own guide, right? And it doesn't really matter WHO made it, as long as it exists, thats what is important..........

EDIT: I also don't really like the fact that it is offencive.....you might scare the new people......
